Abstract

This study is to grasp the changes in the quality of fife and the sexuality of the patients who, had mastectomy or breast conservative operation. Also we observed these changes according to the type of surgery and period of the treatment.
Since February 1993, 18 mastectomy patients and 10 breast conservative patients were observed for 8 months from the begining of radiation therapy until 6 month after the completion of radiation therapy.
The results can be summarized as follows :
1. The score of quality of life was higher in the patients who received mastectomy than the patientswho received breast conservative operation but it was not significant. The change of the quality of life according to the period of treatment was also not significant.
2. In both groups, the score of sexual life and the frequency of sexual coitus were shown the lowest at the period of the completion of radiation therapy, and after that period those scores significantly increased.
3. The patients with breast conservative operation showed a somewhat better score than those with mastectomy in terms of the score of sexual life, frequency of sexual coitus and difficulties of sexual life.
These results imply that a close attention should be paid to whether the patients who have undergone breast cancer surgery have sexual and emotional difficulties. And the quality of life and the sexual life are not determined by the size of the remained breast but by other factors : the diagnosis of cancer and the em )tonal causes.
